You're right. The spell casting isn't required, or even the norm in a lot of paths. However, there are pagan and non pagan Witches that do cast spells. It's not just Paganism that does this. There's an article in the main site about it, if you want to know more.

Spell casting is very difficult for some people to believe in. However, I am going to compare it to something else that you'll find that a lot of people have faith in. Prayer. They are not exactly the same, but in some ways are very similar. Both prayers and spells can take a long time to manifest the desired change. And in both, the caster/petitioner usually asks a higher power for guidance. (Not always the case, but it's more common in the circles I've run in.)

There are some things to remember about spell casting. First and foremost: if you do not believe that the spell will succeed, chances are good it will not. Some people see this as a waste of energies. Another thing, spells are often not worded or intended to work immediately. Patience can definitely be a virtue. And often spells are not seen to have an immediate effect anyway. Example: the caster may request justice to be done in a certain situation. Like a court case. But many court cases take weeks, often years to be seen through to the end. You won't likely see results from this kind of spell within a day. There are other kinds as well, though. You may cast a spell for healing, and may indeed see an improvement in days. Sometimes, though, with healing, the person/animal/situation dies, or explodes into action. What you may not see (you may think the spell didn't work) is that some types of healing can only be done through a person moving on to the next life. It's not always an easy road to walk. To me, spell casting is an intentional form of trying to control the events around you. If you choose this path, you must be ready to deal with both the consequences, and the gifts. But you must also be able to look past the individual results to the bigger picture. Don't forget that many pieces are just part of the whole.

Hope I didn't scare you off. I cast spells myself, at need. I find it worth the effort. Weather you will or not though, I am not sure.
